Cambridge City Smart Sensor Traffic Counts
Contents
- Summary
-
In the summer of 2019, a network of smart traffic sensors were installed in Cambridge to monitor the impact of the Mill Road bridge closure. A high concentration of sensors were installed for approximately 18 months to gather data before the closure, during the time when there is no vehicle traffic coming over Mill Road Bridge and then after the bridge is re-opened.
Since then, additional sensors in more locations have been installed, due to the level of insight that can be gained from these sensors. Due to continued demand to monitor traffic flows, many of these sensors will remain beyond 2020 in strategic locations and the network is expected to grow. Data for those more permanent sites, outside of the Mill Road project will be published on this page.
The below data release offers counts for each sensor over 1 hour periods. The current data covers the period from the individual sensor being installed until 11/04/2021. This data is updated monthly.
Hourly counts are broken down by inbound and outbound journeys. The data can be broken down by inbound and outbound journeys.
Counts are also broken down by journey type. This includes:
Pedestrians Cyclists Buses LGV OGV 1 OGV 2 Please note that some sensors record counts across three 'count lines'- centre, left hand side (LHS) and right hand side (RHS). The reason for having multiple countlines is so that the sensor can provide more accurate counts at different points across the road, especially picking up pedestrian counts on LHS/LHS count lines.
For those sensors with multiple contlines, the data that has been released is disaggregated across the individual countlines. For sensor level counts, it is possible to aggregate all countlines by hourly intervals.
